Walk 5.  Wild flowers and a Roman connection                        3? miles

This route is particularly good for wildflowers in spring and summer.

From the People?s Market go up Speltham Hill as far as the corner, go through the gate on the right and along the lower path to the gates.   Take the left-hand gate and climb up the hill left, passing the Jubilee seat.   Go through the gate at the top onto a path which initially runs between two fences, then along the edge of a field.   On reaching the road, cross over to a lay-by and take the path through the gap beside the gate.   This follows the boundary of the park above Bury Lodge.

Bury Lodge was built in flint early in the 19th century and is visible from the main road below.  It is splendidly sited in parkland overlooking the valley.   Here is archaeological evidence of a Roman Villa nearby.

In a short while the path turns right under trees and drops down to the main road.   Cross over, taking great care of the traffic, then turn right down the road for some 50 metres.   At the footpath sign, take the downhill path diagonally right across the field following the electricity poles.   Climb a stile to the road, cross over to the next stile, then go through two paddocks.   The next stile leads into Madams Copse.   Many wild flowers can be found here, especially in spring, when there is a profusion of bluebells, primroses, wood anemones and red campion, and orchids if you are lucky.

The path winds through the wood and leads to Mensland Lane, where you turn right.   At the T-junction with Cams Lane, go left up the hill then turn right onto a footpath after Cams house.   The path goes through several paddocks.   At the junction with another path, turn right.   You will reach the road by an old timber-framed house called The Green Man, which used to be a pub.

Turn left along the main road (Green Lane) to a small housing estate (Stewarts Green).   Turn right here and cross the grass to a narrow path ahead that goes between two houses.   Cross a field and on reaching the high wall of the churchyard, go through a small iron gate and along a path into the churchyard.   Turn right and go downhill to the High Street and back to the People?s Market.
